Lily’s English: The LandLady – By Roald Dahl – Continued

“Thank you for the tea and company this evening, but I shall be off to be now, goodnight.” Billy responded.

“I hope you sleep well.”

Billy left the living room feeling light in the head as he tripped up the stairs. As soon as his head hit the pillow he fell into a deep sleep. He had frightening dreams that made him awake in shock. Billy lay there in the darkness, conscious of someone watching him take every breath, every movement as his mind buzzed with concerning thoughts. He had such a desperate urge to check the time, but couldn’t make out the clock in the dimness. Billy was too anxious to turn the light on and check just in case there were to be someone there. He was so desperate that he gently placed his finger on the switch and the glow of the light beam filled his room. The glow of the beams were harsh, drowning him making his eye squint in shock. The shadows of the trees outside his window danced on the floor and walls like black demons.

His eyes began to feel heavy and he started dozing off until suddenly, crashes and bangs were erupting below him which made him jump. He thought it was all a dream and his imagination so ignored it. The sounds then were growing louder and more vicious which kept him up. He was now beginning to worry and decided to investigate the noise that was keeping him up. As he began creeping down the stairs, a voice echoed down the hallway. Billy quietly began to edge closer and closer and closer to the noise until it stopped. He called out

“Landlady is that you?”

Billy had tried to sound polite but his nerves made his voice shake and croak as if it wasn’t him speaking. As Billy tiptoed along the hallway, the footsteps of someone trying to sneak up on him made the floorboards vibrate beneath him. He was aware someone was there so he turned around in panic and yelled again,

“Who’s there?”

Then all of a sudden Billy felt the breath of someone that had crept up on him, which sent shivers down his spine and his adrenaline began pumping. His heart was beating like a drum and had felt like it was about to burst. His nerves began circulating throughout his body. An object ejected into him and the wrenching pain of blood gushing out of his shoulder made him crash to the floor like waves crashing in a severe storm on the sand. As he lay there for a few seconds the pain tingled throughout his whole body growing more and more until, all around Billy went black.
