Lily’s English: Poem Studying – On The Pulse Of The Morning – Maya Angelou

The poem, On The Pulse Of The Morning is about the country of America as one. Maya Angleou read the poem celebrating Bill Clinton’s inauguration. The poem is therefore significant as because of the new president it was like a new day to change and make the country become one and to face the problems as a whole. Maya Angelou refers to America as a Rock, a River and a Tree in the poem, In which creates the effect of America coming together like nature. In the poem Maya Angelou is also giving the idea to put the future in the past so the next generations do not have to face the horrible events she has.

“ History, despite its wrenching pain,

Cannot be unlived, but if faced

With courage, need not be lived again.”

“Lift up your eyes upon

This day breaking for you.”

Give birth again

To the dream.”

This example from the poem I personally found the most effective as Maya Angelou is summing up the poem in these few stanzas. In which I found this easiest to comprehend, as the meaning behind these lines is that America’s history was damaging to society and that today’s modern day we do not want to relive the harmful events. In addition America can change if they work as one and put the future behind them. Relating back to myself and the society the poem was said on the day of Bill Clinton’s inauguration, which affects the society as it is stating the urge for change and the hope it will happen. The technique used to create the significance of these lines is the metaphors used. “Give birth to the dream” This is not scientifically nor physically possible so is effective. Overall, the stanzas above are stating that America can make the change and the great impact it will have for America’s future.

“Here on the pulse of this new day

You may have the grace to look up and out

And into you sister’s eyes, and into

Your brother’s face, your country

And say simply

Very simply

With hope

Good morning.”

The last stanza in the poem is used to conclude the poem and finalize that America needs to come together as one if they want to create a future they want. Again Maya Angleou uses metaphors to create the unrealistic effect with depthful meaning behind it. “And into your sister’s eyes, and into your brother’s face, your country” Maya Angelou is not literally meaning your relative brother and sister, she means America’s population and the people around you. She decided to finish her final line with “Good morning” to say because it is a new day lets create a new life so the future is enjoyable.
